The Symptoms of ADHD

Inattention Symptoms

  • Difficulty listening (at school, at work, or at home)
  • Difficulty paying attention (in school, in meetings, or watching movies)
  • Avoidance of tasks that require sustained attention (reading, board games)
  • Difficulty finishing things (homework, projects, movies, book, or household chores)
  • Losing or misplacing things (homework, keys, wallet or cell phone)
  • Difficulty staying organized

Behavior

Child Adult
  • Not listening
  • Not following through on tasks
  • Inability to organize
  • Difficulty sustaining attention in meetings, while reading or doing paperwork
  • Slowness and inefficiency or paralyzing procrastination
  • Poor time management

Impulsivity/Hyperactivity Symptoms

  • Squirming or fidgeting, difficulty staying still
  • Excessive activity, such as running or climbing
  • Feelings of restlessness
  • Needing to be busy all of the time
  • Difficulty working or playing quietly
  • Excessive talking, interrupting others
  • Difficulty waiting for a turn in social or other situations

Behavior

Child Adult
  • Squirms, Fidgets, or cannot stay seated
  • Runs and climbs excessively
  • Cannot play or work quietly
  • Blurts out answers
  • Unable to sit through meetings
  • Drives too fast
  • Chooses a very active job
  • Interrupts others; makes inappropriate comments

 

In addition, ADHD could also be present with and exacerbate symptoms of:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Conduct disorders
  • Substance abuse
