Endoscopic Spinal Tumor Resection Surgery

UPMC Content 3

There are many ways for surgeons to remove or resect tumors.

What Is an Endoscopic Spinal Tumor Resection?

Endoscopic spinal tumor resection is minimally invasive and provides patients with less trauma and a faster recovery because the procedure uses much smaller incisions than traditional surgeries.

Endoscopic spinal tumor resection is used to treat both benign and malignant tumors of the spine. The endoscope (a thin tube with both a light source and a microscopic camera) allows surgeons to view the affected area on a large television screen in order to navigate the tiny tools used to remove the tumor.

An endoscopic approach allows surgeons to remove tumors in a quick, effective manner with minimal scarring and pain for patients. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within weeks of the procedure. However, each patient’s hospital stay and recovery time depends on the size of the tumor and the patient’s individual health care needs.
