Meet the Physicians
Mark E. Baratz, MD
Mark Baratz, MD, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served as vice chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital and director of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery until 2012. Dr. Baratz was the hand surgery consultant to the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1999 to 2012. He is president-elect of the American Association of Hand Surgery. Dr. Baratz has nearly 100 published articles, book chapters, and textbooks, and is an associate editor for the American and European Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of Hand Surgery. Dr. Baratz has been recognized as one of Pittsburgh’s "Top Docs" since 2004. He has been elected to America’s Top Doctors, America’s Top Orthopedists, and he received Patients' Choice Compassionate Doctor Recognition. He specializes in the care of high-level athletes; arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand; care of arthritis; and conditions affecting nerves and blood vessels. Dr. Baratz has extensive experience with the care of pediatric upper-extremity conditions.

Stephen F. Conti, MD
Stephen F. Conti, MD, is a graduate of New Jersey Medical School in Newark, N.J. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU in New York, N.Y., as well as a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery from the Center for Orthopaedic Care in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before joining Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC, Dr. Conti was clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. He is a two-time recipient of the Golden Mallet Award for excellence in orthopaedic education, and has been consistently voted by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2002, and a Best Doctor in Pittsburgh. Dr. Conti is active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and has authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles on the foot. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery,his areas of clinical expertise include all non-operative and operative orthopaedic problems of the foot, ankle and leg.

Mark A. Fye, MD
Mark A. Fye, MD, is a graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a residency in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, University Hospital of Cleveland, in Ohio. Dr. Fye is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and his areas of clinical expertise include spinal surgery, neck and back care, disc herniations, stenosis, and osteoporotic spinal fractures.

Thomas B. Hughes Jr., MD
Thomas B. Hughes Jr., MD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, as well as a fellowship in hand, upper-extremity, and microvascular surgery at Brown University in Providence, RI. Dr. Hughes is a member of Orthopaedic Specialists–UPMC and is a Cinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He holds various leadership posts with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Hughes is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Orthopaedics and Hand Surgery, expertise in carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder and elbow conditions, rotator cuff treatment, shoulder-joint replacement, and all upper-extremity surgery.

Alan H. Klein, MD
Alan H. Klein, MD, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC. With a mechanical engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Klein used his background in biomechanics to test new implants during his fellowship at the Ferguson Laboratory for Orthopaedic Research at the University of Pittsburgh. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Klein manages arthritis, fractures, and other conditions — often involving the hip, knee, and leg — with conservative treatment, as well as joint replacement, arthroscopy, and other techniques. A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Dr. Klein brings his expertise to UPMC East, where he is developing a Geriatric Fracture Program.

Periklis A. Papapetropoulos, MD
Dr. Papapetropoulos earned his medical degree from the Iuliu Hatieganu School of Medicine in Romania. He completed his residency at Hatzikosta General Hospital, Ioannina in Greece, a hand research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, and a foot and ankle fellowship at UPMC, and a total joint fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. In addition to English, he is fluent in Greek and Romanian. Dr. Papapetropoulos is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the Greece-European Union.

Christopher C. Schmidt, MD
Christopher C. Schmidt, MD, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wis. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC, as well as a fellowship in shoulder, elbow, hand surgery at Indiana Shoulder to Hand Center in Indianapolis, Ind. Director of shoulder surgery at Orthopaedic Specialists–UPMC, Dr. Schmidt has won national awards for his work on tendon and ligament injuries, including the O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, given by the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He is also an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr. Schmidt is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a certificate of added qualification in surgery of the hand. His clinical emphasis is in shoulder, elbow, and hand surgery, including arthroscopic techniques and joint replacement (total and reverse shoulder replacement), as well as repair of the tendon and ligament, and nerve and fracture care.

Dean G. Sotereanos, MD
Dean G. Sotereanos, MD, graduated from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC, and a fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Before joining Orthopaedic Specialists–UPMC, Dr. Sotereanos was professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine, West Penn Allegheny Health System campus. Since 2009, he has repeatedly been named one of the Top Doctors in Pittsburgh by Pittsburgh Magazine, and is a member of the American Association for Hand Surgery, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, and the American Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow. Dr. Sotereanos is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery. He specializes in hand surgery, with expertise in carpal tunnel syndrome, elbow conditions, joint replacement, shoulder conditions, and upper-extremity surgery.
