Facing a diagnosis of cancer can be a frightening experience for patients and their families. At Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, the Supportive and Palliative Care Clinic helps patients and their families deal with quality of life issues surrounding cancer treatment.

Our Clinics

Based at Magee, this group of specialists works together with your oncologist to help manage symptoms related
to a diagnosis of cancer and the side effects of cancer treatments. They are there to provide an extra layer of support.

UPMC East Pain and Supportive Care Clinic

This clinic is designed to provide specialty symptom management for patients with advanced and potentially life-limiting illness such as cancer, cardiopulmonary disease and dementia by treating pain, nausea, anxiety and other physical and emotional symptoms.


The clinic can also serve as a resource to assist patients and their families as they deal with quality of life issues surrounding serious illness. Patients with goals of curative and life-prolonging treatments such as chemotherapy or organ transplantation can also benefit from support and symptom management.


Dr. Helen Dorra is seeing patients every Tuesday morning between 8 a.m. and Noon.

Geropalliative Care Clinic at UPMC St. Margaret

UPMC St. Margaret patients with serious, life-limiting illness now have additional resources to help maximize their quality of life. Referrals are being accepted at the Geriatric Care Center at UPMC St. Margaret for patients requiring outpatient palliative care. Available services include specialty pain management, non-pain symptom management, psychosocial support, goal-driven care planning, home/institutional care visits, and end-of-life care. Treatment is provided by an interdisciplinary team that includes Dr. Richard Hoffmaster, MD, as well as nursing, social services, pharmacist support, and on-site psychiatry.


Consultations can be offered for any patient aged 60 and over at any stage of life-limiting illness by provider referral.

The UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute Cardiopulmonary program offers resources to help patients improve their quality of life, and provides assistance to patients and their families living with advanced heart and lung disease.
