  • State-of-the-art care for people with interstitial lung disease (ILD) that is comprehensive and compassionate
  • International leadership in research on lung inflammation and fibrosis, promoting the translation of scientific discoveries into new treatments for patients with these lung disorders
  • A complete resource for the education of patients and their families regarding ILD and its impact on their lifestyle
  • Patient-friendly advice and support for people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)

The ILD Treatment Team

At the Simmons Center, evaluation and treatment by a multidisciplinary team is the rule rather than the exception.

The center's clinical team includes:

  • Pulmonologists, including lung-transplant specialists, occupational physicians, and sleep specialists
  • Pathologists
  • Thoracic surgeons
  • Rheumatologists
  • Clinical nurse specialists

Simmons Center specialists work closely with colleagues in related medical specialties, as well as University of Pittsburgh researchers, to:

  • Improve the care of people with ILD
  • Offer our patients the full capabilities of UPMC, a world-class academic health system
  • Translate basic IPF research into new treatments that may save lives in the future
  • Make referrals to UPMC's Lung Transplant Program — one of the most experienced in the world — for possible lung transplantation
