Shiatsu at the Center for Integrative Medicine

UPMC Content 3

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is Japanese acupressure. It combines Western understanding of anatomy, physiology, and psychology with Eastern traditional Chinese Medical Theory.

The energy meridian system utilized for treatment is the same system that is used for acupuncture, yet hands & finger pressure are the tools, rather than needles.

A Shiatsu treatment is customarily given on a soft floor mar or in a chair while the client remains fully clothed. Physical, mental, emotional, and relational states are considered during a treatment.

Background

Zen Buddhist priests brought Chinese Medicine to Japan in 600 AD. The current mode of practice was developed in Japan between 1920 - 1980s. Practitioners in Japan are licensed by the federal government for both preventative and remedial therapies.
