A very limited number of UPMC specialty services will remain in-network for Highmark commercial members in western Pennsylvania after June 30, 2019.
- UPMC Center for Assistive Technology
- UPMC Center for Excellence for Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis
- Transplants unique to UPMC in the region
- Living-donor liver
- Lung
- Heart-lung
- Small bowel
These specialty services will be in-network for Highmark patients even if the services are performed at UPMC hospitals that would otherwise be out-of-network.
The specialty transplants listed above also are in-network services for other Blue Cross and Blue Shield members accessing UPMC through the Blue Card program.
UPMC Cancer Care
Most UPMC cancer care in western Pennsylvania, including the flagship UPMC Hillman Cancer Center located at UPMC Shadyside, will be out-of-network for Highmark commercial plan members after June 30, 2019. The special protection for oncology care created by the Consent Decrees will no longer exist.
However, some UPMC cancer care facilities in western Pa., including those operated in conjunction with other community health care providers, will remain in-network for at least two years after the Consent Decrees expire on June 30, 2019.
