Nationally Recognized Care In Your Community
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in western Pennsylvania. We earned that designation by consistently delivering cutting-edge cancer care.
We've also undertaken significant research efforts that contribute to new and better therapies. This has changed the lives of patients every day and the future of cancer care itself.
Throughout our network of more than 70 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and Maryland, our cancer team is close to home. It also includes experts in:
- Cancer research.
- Cancer surgery.
- Medical oncology.
- Radiation therapies.
- Specialized care for all cancer types, even the most rare and complex.
- Supportive programs that help patients navigate the mental, physical, financial, and social challenges of cancer treatment.
From research to prevention to treatment and beyond, UPMC Hillman is here for you.
What Does It Mean to Be an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center?
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is our country's leading authority on cancer. NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers are an elite group of cancer centers that demonstrate excellence in cancer research, patient care, education, and community outreach.
There are only 57 NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country.
For patients, receiving treatment at an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center can mean better outcomes. A 2015 study of individuals with newly diagnosed, adult-onset cancer showed that patients who received treatment from a Comprehensive Cancer Center had better outcomes than those treated at cancer centers without this designation.
Here at UPMC Hillman, we offer the latest advances in clinical care, backed by evidence-based research. We remain committed to reducing the burden of cancer in the communities that we serve.
What Does Cancer Research Do for Patients?
Research can change how we diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer and care for cancer survivors. UPMC Hillman's research teams include doctors and scientists from many disciplines. We're all working together to explore:
- Cancer cells and how they behave.
- How psychological, behavioral, and social factors impact cancer.
- Who gets cancer, and how we can prevent it.
- The immune system and its role in cancer development and treatment.
- How viruses can both cause and fight cancer.
- New cancer drugs and therapies.
Because Hillman's doctors and scientists work together, research can move from our laboratories into our clinics quickly. This means that patients can have access to cutting-edge care — including more than 450 clinical trials — sooner, and right here in our local communities.
If you have cancer, trust the experts.
