Mark considers communication an important part of his job as mayor. So when doctors discovered a large brain tumor that was affecting his speech, Mark knew it needed to be removed, despite the risks.
After consulting with experts in Connecticut, Boston, and New York City, it became clear there was one neurosurgeon right for the job — Robert Friedlander, MD, Chairman of Neurosurgery at UPMC.
Today, the mayor is back at work and grateful. “I’m able to listen and talk to people,” says Mark. “That’s a gift that has been given back to me. I’ll never forget it.”
