This specialty residency training program is designed to prepare graduates to lead and direct the practice of pharmacy. This program includes a strong clinical core experience during the PGY1 year to allow the resident to gain firsthand experience and confidence in clinical practice. The understanding of clinical practice is necessary the resident to grow into a pharmacy leader and to leverage automation and technology to grow the practice of pharmacy. Electives during the PGY1 year and the PGY2 year will focus on growing leadership skills and harnessing technology to improve patient outcomes.
As part of the PGY1 year, residents will complete core rotations in acute care, ICU care, and ambulatory care. They will present at Pharmacy Grand Rounds and the Residency Research Series. They will have the option of completing the Mastery of Teaching Program.
The PGY2 year allows the resident to focus on developing themselves as leaders. The resident will also work on developing business skills and deeper understanding of the role of technology in hospital pharmacy practice. The resident will learn how to create and grow a culture that promotes medication safety and excellence in pharmacy practice. He or she will participate in research that will improve the workings of the pharmacy to day and potentially lay the groundwork for process improvements for years to come. Each resident will also have the opportunity to participate on committees and network throughout UPMC. The resident will receive a certificate upon completion of the PGY2 portion of the program.
Pharmacy practice relies heavily on information technology. The leaders of tomorrow understand technology and can harness it to improve patient care and grow the practice of pharmacy at their institution. The HSPA residents at UPMC may choose an Automation track as part of their PGY1/PGY2 program. This resident will use their electives to explore deeply the roles and interworking of the technology utilized throughout UPMC. Residents completing this track will receive an additional certificate of completion.
