The Pregnancy Recovery Center (PRC), a patient-centered medical home, provides comprehensive and compassionate care for pregnant women with opioid use disorder. Patients enrolled in the program receive:
Conversions are done weekly in an office-based setting, and ongoing maintenance treatment is provided throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period. In the postpartum period, PRC staff connect patients with a community provider for ongoing MAT.
Magee offers medicine-assisted treatment (MAT) with methadone through an inpatient conversion program. To be admitted into the program, a positive pregnancy test and positive opioid screening are required. While in the hospital, patients receive:
Once discharged, patients will be connected with a local, federally licensed methadone treatment program* for ongoing therapy.
*Magee is not affiliated with any specific methadone clinic and will work with any community clinic to transition the patient to her community upon discharge.
The Parent Partnership Unit (PPU) is an inpatient program at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital for babies who have been born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). The PPU provides your newborn with outstanding care while you get the support you need to develop as a mother and recover from opioid addiction.
UPMC Magee Recovery Services cares for women who are not pregnant through the Women’s Recovery Center. The Women’s Recovery Center can direct treatment for women of all ages and for all substances, based on their unique medical histories and needs.
Babies who have had known opioid exposure and babies with NAS must be observed in the hospital for a minimum of five to seven days after birth.
During observation, a nonpharmacologic treatment approach is taken, which includes low-lighting, quiet rooms, and skin-to-skin contact. If there is a need to add a pharmacologic approach, infants will be transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
With either treatment approach, infants are provided individualized care by a team of experts who collaborate with parents to manage the symptoms of withdrawal. Parents are an important part of the care team.
