The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UPMC Mercy

State-of-the-art care for your baby in an intimate, compassionate setting

Every parent hopes and prays to give birth to a healthy baby. But if your newborn requires added or specialized medical attention, our 12-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers our tiniest and frailest patients expert and highly personalized medical support.

UPMC Mercy also recognizes the added challenges that families face during this stressful time. Our emphasis on family-centered care ensures that you’ll be actively involved in your baby’s care while in the NICU.

There are many reasons why your infant may need to be admitted to our NICU, from being born preterm to having an unexpected complication or illness.

Our neonate medicine providers bring years of specialty training and experience to your baby’s care in our NICU. They also are committed to providing you and your family with comprehensive educational, emotional and spiritual support. Our NICU team includes:

  • A neonatologist (a pediatrician specializing in the special needs of sick infants)
  • Nurse practitioners with advanced neonatal training
  • Registered nurses with specialized training and certifications
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Certified breastfeeding counselors and lactation consultants
  • Social workers
  • Behavioral development/child life therapist
  • Hospital chaplains

As a Level III NICU, UPMC Mercy is qualified to care for infants with very serious and challenging conditions, including:

  • Helping babies withdraw from drug exposure (known as neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS)
  • Infants with respiratory and medical needs

We are also the primary referral hospital for The Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health when a baby needs NICU care.

Should your baby require even more specialized care, we can arrange for transfer to the Level III NICU at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.
