Oral tablets: 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg

 

About this drug

Atenolol (ah-TEN-oh-lol) usually is used to treat high blood pressure, fast heart rate, heart failure, or chest pain (angina). It is known as a beta-blocker. It reduces the work load of the heart. This medicine also helps the heart beat more regularly.

 

Side effects

Common side effects are:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Weakness
  • Slow heart beat
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue. Be careful while taking this drug. Driving and using machines can be dangerous if you are not alert.

 

Rare side effects include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Worsening of heart failure
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Depression
  • Swelling of ankles, feet, and lower legs

If any of these side effects become severe or bother you, call your doctor. Do not take over-the-counter medicine for your symptoms.

If you miss a dose

If you miss a medicine dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your

your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double up” on doses to catch up.

 

How to take this medicine

Take this medicine with fluids at the same time every day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You may take it with or without food. Do not stop taking this drug unless your doctor tells you to.
