About this drug
Diltiazem (dil-TYE-a-zem) is used to treat high blood pressure. This medicine also is used to treat irregular heart beats and chest pain (angina). It is a calcium channel blocker.
Common side effects are:
- Rapid heart beats (palpitations)
- Increased fluid in the ankles and legs
Rare side effects include:
- Decreased heart rate
- Flushing of the skin
- Shortness of breath
If any of these side effects become severe or bother you, call your doctor. Do not take over-the-counter medicines for your symptoms.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription medicine, over-the-counter medicine, or herbal products that you are taking. He or she will check for interactions.
If you miss a dose
If you miss a medicine dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at its scheduled time, and continue your usual dosing schedule. Do not
“double up” on doses to catch up.

stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
How to take this medicine
Take this medicine exactly as it is prescribed. The long-acting versions of this medicine(Cardizem CD®, Cardizem SR®, and Dilacor XR®) should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Do not chew or crush the capsules.
