Senior Living Options at UPMC and Affiliates

UPMC Content 3

There are many types of living options available to seniors depending on the level of care needed.

Independent Living

Seniors who are active and independent, but no longer want or need the burden of owning a home, may choose to live in an independent living facility. Independent living facilities provide many of the same comforts of home without the maintenance and upkeep.

Personal Care

Personal care facilities offer seniors extra help with daily routines and activities such as:

  • medication management
  • nutritional support
  • assistance with daily personal care

Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities provide more complex care for seniors who need more support than is available in either an independent living or personal care setting.

Skilled Nursing

Skilled nursing facilities are available for people who need 24-hour nursing care after discharge from a hospital or transfer from another type of facility or home. Skilled nursing options can be on a short- or long-term both short and long-term time basis, depending on a person's condition or injury.

Caring, dedicated staff provide comprehensive skilled nursing services that address the physical, psychological and social needs of seniors.

Skilled nursing staff include:

  • Geriatricians
  • Certified registered nurse practitioners
  • Registered nurses
  • Licensed practical nurses
  • Certified nursing assistants
