School-Based Services for Children and Adolescents

Children and teens spend most of the day in school. They are expected to listen to teachers, learn new things, interact with classmates, and behave appropriately. Sometimes these tasks can be difficult for children.

If your child is struggling emotionally or behaviorally, it affects every part of their school day. They may seem depressed or anxious or act angry or defiant.

School-based behavioral health services bring mental and behavioral health support directly into schools. This approach makes it easier for children and teens to get help where they already spend so much time. Our team helps students build skills to manage emotions, improve behavior, and succeed in school and life.

UPMC Western Behavioral Health School-Based Services has a strong presence in many schools in Allegheny and surrounding counties. We offer school-based services in Altoona, Beaver, and Erie school districts. We strive to make mental and behavioral health support and prevention programs available to all children.

What Are School-Based Services for Children and Adolescents?

UPMC Western Behavioral Health provides mental and behavioral health services in schools. We support children who are struggling with their emotions and behaviors. These challenges make it harder to learn, build friendships, and enjoy school.

Mental health concerns among children and teens are increasing. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 69% of public schools report an increase in mental health issues among their students. And the number is growing.

Our program provides school-based assessment and care. We treat children dealing with depression, trauma, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health issues.

Our school-based services offer:

  • Extra assistance for students who need more specific interventions.
  • Focused strategies for students with more serious needs.
  • Universal support for all students and staff.

School plays a significant role in a child’s social and emotional development. It’s an ideal setting for understanding a child’s mental and behavioral health.

What Conditions Do We Treat?

We support children and adolescents who may be struggling with:

  • ADHD.
  • Adolescent eating disorders.
  • Autism and intellectual disabilities.
  • Bipolar disorder and mood dysregulation.
  • Childhood trauma.
  • Depression and anxiety.
  • Disruptive or high-risk behaviors.
  • Early childhood behavioral concerns.
  • Family-related challenges.
  • LGBTQIA+-related concerns.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • Risk of early-onset psychosis.
  • Suicide risk.

What School-Based Programs Do We Offer?

Our school-based programs help children build emotional and behavioral skills. These skills help them cope with and manage their emotions so they can participate more fully in school.

School-based programs that are available to school districts and students within Allegheny and surrounding counties include:

  • Student Assistance Programs (SAPs) — SAPs help students and families address barriers to learning. Barriers like academic problems, social concerns, and attendance issues. They also help with substance use or mental and behavioral health challenges. SAP teams involve school faculty and staff. A UPMC Western Behavioral Health liaison provides mental and behavioral health resources.
  • COOL Zones (intervention through Children Overcoming Obstacles and Limits) — COOL Zones are welcoming spaces in schools, community locations, and offices. Children ages 3 through 12 can get support for aggression, anxiety, withdrawal, family disruption, and responses to trauma. COOL Zone was developed through a partnership with The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

Our outreach and consultation programs include:

  • Healthy Schools — This program promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and social-emotional well-being. It is a partnership between UPMC Western Behavioral Health School-Based Services and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Division of Community Health.
  • MindHacks — A flexible prevention model designed for middle school teachers. It gives teachers tools to help students develop a healthy mindset. Students will develop interpersonal relationships and a sense of connectedness. They’ll also learn positive coping strategies and improve their overall wellness. MindHacks was developed by a partnership among the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Citrone 33, UPMC Western Behavioral Health, EMBRACE Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3).
  • Speakers Bureau — This service provides ongoing professional development for teachers, staff, and administrators. Topics include levels of care, depression and anxiety, and school resource mapping. It also covers how to complete the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale with students, as well as other areas important to schools.

What Services Are Provided by Student Assistance Programs (SAPs)?

An SAP team supports students facing challenges that affect their ability to learn.

These issues may include:

  • Academic difficulties.
  • Attendance concerns.
  • Mental or behavioral health issues.
  • Social challenges.
  • Substance use.

The SAP team typically includes:

  • A UPMC Western Behavioral Health professional to connect families to mental health resources.
  • Parents and caregivers, whose knowledge and input about their child are crucial. You are the expert on your child.
  • School staff, including administrators, counselors, and teachers who want your child to succeed.

Concerns do not have to be severe to ask for help for your child. Small concerns can grow over time, and early support can make a big difference.

All information shared with the SAP team is confidential.

Who Is Eligible for School-Based Services?

All children in grades 1–12 who live in participating school districts have access to school-based services. The services are designed to be easily accessible so students receive the help they need.
