Dr. Tyler-Kabara is assistant professor of neurological surgery and bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and director of the Neural Enhancement Laboratory.
After working at the National Institutes of Health as a biomedical engineer, she earned her MD and PhD from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Dr. Tyler-Kabara completed her internship in general surgery and residency in neurological surgery at UPMC. She then completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham. She is board-certified in neurological surgery.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Tyler-Kabara directs the Neural Enhancement Laboratory in the Department of Neurological Surgery, where current research projects involve collaborations with the Human Rehabilitation and Neural Engineering Laboratory for clinical trials in human brain-computer interfaces.
In her clinical work Dr. Tyler-Kabara has pioneered the use of expanded endonasal surgery of the skull base in extremely young children. Additional clinical work and her research focus on the restoration of function for both adult and pediatric patients with movement disorders and epilepsy. Additional research focuses on using brain-computer interfaces, including the control of a prosthetic hand, to restore function to those who have suffered neurologic injury.
Dr. Tyler-Kabara has authored or coauthored 36 articles published in refereed journals and six book chapters and invited publications.
