Chemical Peel

Are you looking for a brighter, more youthful, and even-toned appearance?

A chemical peel may help you meet your skin goals.

What Is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel:

  • Is a very popular, noninvasive cosmetic technique.
  • Stimulates the growth of new and healthy skin cells.
  • Improves the skin's feel, appearance and condition.

Your recovery will depend on the depth of the peel you decide on, sometimes with little to no downtime.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for Me?

Ask a licensed aesthetician at the UPMC Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center if this cosmetic treatment is right for you.

A chemical peel may help enhance your look and revive your skin if you have:

  • Acne.
  • Blemishes.
  • Brown spots.
  • Fine wrinkles.
  • Mild scarring.
  • Sun damage.
  • Uneven coloring/pigmentation.
  • Other skin flaws.

Types of Chemical Peels

We offer many types of chemical peels at the UPMC Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center.

These include Jessner peels and SkinCeuticals® peels, such as:

  • The red carpet peel.
  • Glycolic peels.
  • Sensitive skin peels.
  • Pigmentation peels.

These peels differ in their active ingredients and depth. Certain peels treat specific issues.

Chemical Peel Risks

Risks can include:

  • Color imbalances, such as hyper- and hypopigmentation.
  • Infection.
  • Short-term redness and flaking of the skin.
  • Temporary sensitivity to the sun.

A chemical peel isn't right for everyone. Your risks may be greater or different than those of others.

Your care team will review the potential risks before your treatment.

Your Pre-Chemical Peel Consultation

Before your chemical peel, you'll meet with an aesthetician from the UPMC Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center.

During your consult, we'll:

  • Discuss your goals and desired outcomes to help choose the right peel for you.
  • Let you know how to prepare before the peel.
  • Give you instructions for after the process.

What to Expect During a Chemical Peel

How long your treatment takes will depend on the type of peel you get. Different peeling agents are good for different skin types.

Our team will discuss the best options for you before your procedure.

During your chemical peel, our aesthetician will:

  • Thoroughly clean and prepare the skin.
  • Apply the peeling agent.
  • Moisturize the face.

Recovery After Chemical Peel

In most cases, while recovering from your treatment you:

  • May temporarily feel as if you have a mild sunburn.
  • May have dry skin that will peel, about three to four days after treatment.
  • May see flakes of skin (much like peeling from a sunburn).
  • Will need to avoid being out in the sun on the day of and the day after your appointment.
  • Can resume day-to-day life, including going to work, right away.

What Results Can I Expect After My Chemical Peel?

Results from your chemical peel will vary based on:

  • How healthy your skin is to start.
  • How many treatments you receive.
  • The type of peel you had.

You may need regular treatments over a certain timeframe for the best results.

We'll discuss what to expect when you meet with us.
