As people age, their need for help performing daily tasks in their homes may increase. With more than 75 years of combined clinical experience, our occupational therapists at UPMC Centers for Rehab Services are very skilled at determining how an aging person’s physical, emotional, and cognitive skills influence his or her ability to perform everyday activities in various environments.

Reasons for In-Home Care and Assessment

The most frequently cited reasons for seniors needing to leave their homes as they grow older include:

  • Falling or fear of falling
  • Problems with bathroom use
  • Bathing and dressing difficulties
  • Forgetting to take medications
  • Memory problems
  • Wandering
  • Disruption of daily routine
  • Safety concerns
  • Poor nutrition
  • Feeling overwhelmed

Home Care Program Features

As part of the In-Home Assessment Program, our skilled occupational therapists can:

  • Conduct a home accessibility and safety assessment
  • Address client and caregiver concerns on-site
  • Identify safety risk factors that limit daily activities
  • Suggest ways to increase client independence
  • Make recommendations for equipment to improve safety
  • Suggest ways to reduce dependency on the caregiver for daily activities
  • Assist with mobility concerns
