For many adults, driving represents independence, freedom, competence, and control. It is a way to access health care, buy necessities, and stay connected to family and friends. When illness or injury limits driving abilities, a deeply personal and emotional change may occur, so returning to driving becomes a top priority for many individuals.
Successful completion of a pre-driver’s assessment helps identify problems that interfere with safe driving and reassures health care providers, family members, and patients of their competency to drive.
UPMC Centers for Rehab Services Pre-Driver’s Assessment Program provides patients with an opportunity to return to safe driving. The assessment includes visual, cognitive, perceptual, and physical components. If patients successfully pass the pre-driver’s assessment, they may be referred to a certified driving specialist at the Center for Assistive Technology where they can complete an on-road assessment.
