Throughout the body, blood vessels act as a series of roads – carrying life-sustaining, oxygen-rich blood and nutrients. When this vascular system doesn’t work properly due to partial or complete blockages, it is called peripheral vascular disease (PVD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD). Over time, plaque buildup can harden and narrow the vessels, restricting oxygen to the hands, feet and brain.
UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute offers vascular screenings, which include:
Could you have a deadly abdominal aneurysm and not even know? Robert did. Watch Robert’s story and learn about our vascular screenings.
This doppler ultrasound test provides a view of the inside of the carotid arteries in the neck to screen for fatty plaque buildup, which could cause a stroke.
This screening uses doppler ultrasound technology to evaluate the aortic artery in the abdomen for enlargement (aneurysm). Rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is often fatal.
Ultrasound is used in this test to look for a blockage in the arteries of the lower leg that could cause leg pain while walking.
Plaque buildup in the leg arteries is known to be associated with increased risk of heart disease.
