Breast Reconstruction After Cancer
At UPMC in Central Pa., we offer breast reconstruction as a surgical option for women who have had a breast removed (mastectomy).
Breast reconstruction surgery involves rebuilding the breast so that it simulates its original size and shape. The nipple and areola (darker area around the nipple) can be restructured at the same time.
Most women who have had a mastectomy choose to have breast reconstruction as a means to make them look and feel whole again. For women who have lost a breast to cancer or other trauma, breast reconstruction can have a positive effect on their self-confidence. For women who have had a lumpectomy where only part of the breast around the cancer was removed, breast reconstruction may not be needed.
Using today’s advancements in medical technological, your surgeon will perform breast reconstruction surgery to provide you with more realistic and natural-looking results.
Types of Breast Reconstruction:
- Breast cancer reconstruction post mastectomy (TRAM, latissimus muscle flaps or implant-based)
- Nipple reconstruction, areola tattooing, secondary fat grafting procedures
- Breast cancer oncoplastic breast reduction
