Whether you pack your hospital bag weeks in advance or wait until labor begins, you should have a hospital plan in place. Although your hospital stay will only last a few days, you will want to have everything you need to keep you and your baby as comfortable as possible.
We recommend that you complete our prenatal checklist before arriving at the hospital. The checklist contains information about the baby’s pediatrician, any changes to your personal information, and information necessary to apply for your baby’s Social Security number.
Also, we recommend checking with your insurance provider before delivery to determine what services are covered and how much you are expected to pay out of pocket.

It’s best to pack your hospital bag well in advance of your baby’s due date. The bag should contain items that will make you comfortable during your hospital stay, including:
Please do not bring valuables with you to the hospital. We also ask that you leave your suitcase and infant car seat in the car until after you have given birth and have been moved to the postpartum unit.
If you believe that you are in labor, you should call your physician right away. After you arrive at UPMC Magee-Womens, check-in at the welcome center in the main hospital lobby. You will be directed to Labor and Delivery where your care team will greet you.
If you are in labor or need assistance when you arrive at UPMC Magee-Womens, your labor partner may temporarily park at the Emergency Department drop-off. After escorting you to your Labor and Delivery suite, your partner will need to re-park in the designated parking area. If you are not in labor and do not need assistance upon arrival, please park in the designated parking area and proceed to the main lobby.
After delivery, you can count on the knowledgeable, compassionate staff at UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. to care for you and your baby during the first days of your baby's life. Our top priority is to provide the support you need to get your baby's life off to the healthiest possible start.
Your baby will room-in with you during your hospital stay, which means that he or she will spend a majority of the time in your private hospital room. Whenever possible, our nurses will care for you and your baby in your hospital room. In the event that your baby experiences any problems, our Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and newborn nursery staff will be ready to assist.
Your room will include a private shower and a sleeper chair for your partner or support person. If you have a vaginal delivery, you will usually stay in the hospital for two days. If your baby is delivered by cesarean section, you will usually stay in the hospital for three or four days.
Visiting hours for the Postpartum Unit are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Because you need extra rest and time to bond with your new baby, the postpartum unit at UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. observes quiet time from 1 to 3 p.m. We will require that all visitors provide a photo ID. Without ID, there will be no admittance to Magee-Womens. Your partner or support person can visit any time and will be given a wristband to wear. Other than siblings, children under age 12 are not permitted to visit. Although we offer generous visiting hours, we recommend limiting visitors to allow you and your baby to get the rest you need.
