UPMC Content 3

What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression occurs after the birth of a child. It is a serious condition both for the mother and for her family.

How is Postpartum Depression Diagnosed?

Postpartum depression is diagnosed by a doctor who reviews your history and symptoms.

Postpartum depression can be treated with a combination of:

  • Counseling
  • Education
  • Behavior change that is aligned with the challenges of motherhood
  • Medication

Our doctors care for mothers who are expecting babies, babies after they are born, and mothers after they have given birth. We routinely watch for postpartum depression and often have the advantage of knowing the mother prior to the birth of her child.
