Thyroid Biopsy

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck; it helps to regulate body temperature and energy levels.

Types of Thyroid Disease

Many diseases can affect the thyroid:

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a form of hypothyroidism, or underactivity of the thyroid gland. It occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules are not cancerous, but some are. Cancer cells can spread from the thyroid to other organs and tissues.

If your doctor suspects that you may have thyroid disease, he or she may refer you for further testing, which may include performing a biopsy.

The Role of the Pathologist

The pathologist will examine your thyroid tissue biopsy sample and provide a diagnosis that will help your doctor formulate the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
