Our bodies are equipped with a sophisticated means of fighting off disease — the immune system, which includes white blood cells, certain proteins, and specialized organs throughout the body.

The immune system:

  • Works to fend off infectious organisms like viruses, parasites, and bacteria
  • Can help to protect us from cancer
  • Can identify transplanted tissue

UPMC Department of Pathology researchers study the mechanisms of the immune system in order to understand why and how it functions.
