Infectious Disease Research

The skin, the immune system, the mucous membranes, and other structures and functions of our bodies work together to fend off infectious diseases.

Sometimes, the pathogens that cause disease can enter our bodies despite our natural protection mechanisms.

The infectious disease researchers in the Department of Pathology study the ways in which pathogens enter our tissues and make us ill. We study bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and other pathogens to learn how they affect our health.
