Translational Services

UPMC is speeding scientific research from the laboratory bench to the bedside and the health care marketplace. These efforts promote advances in patient care, while boosting local economies through the development of new biotechnology, devices, and other companies.

UPMC researchers working at the most basic cellular level have developed therapies that have lifelong contributions to patient care and enhancing patient lives. UPMC maintains an active research presence in the United States and abroad through a close affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh, and is actively forming partnerships to create research facilities in Italy, with a vision of expanding those partnerships worldwide.

Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center

The Ri.MED Foundation and UPMC are partnering with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to build and manage the Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center (BRBC). UPMC’s record of success with the Region of Sicily and with the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) led to the development of this partnership.

This center will comprise programs that represent the most contemporary themes in biomedical research — drug discovery, vaccine development, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, development of biomedical devices, structural and computational biology, neurosciences, and molecular imaging — and will put UPMC in Italy in the forefront of developing the next generation of medications, vaccines, regenerative therapies, and medical devices.

Similar to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC’s McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Pittsburgh, at BRBC, UPMC will recruit creative and productive scientists, train researchers, and help attract research funding and private investors. Expected to open in Sicily in 2010, BRBC reflects UPMC’s expanding footprint in Italy, and eventually will generate employment for more than 600 individuals.

Cell Factory

Based at ISMETT in Palermo, Italy, the Cell Factory includes three laboratories dedicated to the production of cells to treat end-stage organ failure. It performs advanced research in regenerative medicine. The Cell Factory represents one of the most innovative projects in the field of research in Italy. It offers remote cell preparation for other transplantation centers in Europe and Italy. Telemedicine and telescience systems enable remote learning and teleconsults with experts from around the world.
