Our Priorities

UPMC strives to maintain a culture of learning and nursing excellence for all employees. An environment of inclusion, shared governance, and dedication to quality care are key components of UPMC’s nursing philosophy and priorities.

Nursing Excellence

Nurses at UPMC play a leading role in the delivery of patient care through system wide and local shared governance, as well as participation in national innovations in practice.

Leadership Capacity

At UPMC, we believe all nurses have the potential and ability to become leaders. To develop this capacity for leadership, our nurses are offered formal and informal education, targeted tasks, developmental coaching, individual assessments and
feedback, and reward systems that emphasize leadership’s value.

Culture of Inclusion

UPMC embraces a philosophy of inclusion as a means of creating and sustaining a culture of learning. UPMC supports a multicultural nursing workforce that reflects the ethnic and cultural patient populations we serve.

Healthy Workforce

At UPMC, we are committed to supporting and encouraging a healthy work-life balance among all of our 11,000 nurses. Changes are being set in motion to help us lead the nation in improving the health and wellness of all nurses.

Academic-Service Partnerships

UPMC’s strategic priorities have included impressive work in the area of academic-service partnerships, building new systems and programs for the selection, onboarding, and retention of new graduates, and uniting nurse leaders across the health system and our schools of nursing.
