Shared governance at UPMC begins with the engagement of leaders at the system level.
The system chief nursing officers, from senior communities to tertiary care hospitals, meet monthly at the chief nursing officers leadership team meeting to plan strategically for nursing’s future and support synergy across the system.
The second tier of the shared governance model is the Unit Leaders Council and the Professional Practice Council.
The Unit Leaders Council includes a unit leader representative from each of the business units and the Professional Practice Council includes a staff nurse from each of the business units. These councils are co-chaired by the UPMC chief nursing officer and a unit leader or staff nurse, respectively.
Shared governance councils sponsor projects that advance the UPMC Nursing vision such as healthy workforce and participation in weight loss competitions or organized run-walk races.
The councils then integrate with shared governance at the level of the hospital or other health care delivery setting.
Shared governance is a way of life at UPMC.
