At UPMC, we’re committed to educating future cardiothoracic surgeons as well as ourselves.

People come from all over the globe to receive personalized, hands-on instruction in one of the most innovative teaching environments available.

  • Cardiothoracic surgery residents prepare for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Examination through our two-year training program, and our innovative six-year integrated training program for those just out of medical school. We also offer courses for medical students who want to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery provide professional education for a broad spectrum of cardiothoracic and foregut diseases.
  • Grand rounds and regular teaching conferences ensure that our surgeons stay updated on the latest technological advances and evidence-based medical care for people with diseases and disorders of the chest, lungs, esophagus, and mediastinum.

Leading Innovation and Development

Our cardiothoracic surgeons lead the way in developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating diseases and disorders of the chest and foregut. Surgeons from around the world learn these techniques through special training conferences in UPMC’s state-of-the-art laparoscopic operating rooms.

A national leader, UPMC became one of the first medical centers in the nation to use minimally invasive surgical techniques for treating esophageal and lung cancers.

Our cardiothoracic transplant surgeons have performed more than 3,000 heart, lung, and combined heart-lung transplants since the program’s inception.

And we continue to innovate and pioneer new techniques in robotic surgery, artificial heart implantation, and development of artificial heart-assist devices.
