MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy​

An MRI-guided breast biopsy is most helpful when your mammogram or other imaging:

  • Doesn't pick up a suspicious mass in your breast.
  • Shows an area of distortion.
  • Finds changes in breast tissue.

MRI-guided biopsy is a low-risk test since it doesn't use radiation.

Doctors use MRI imaging to guide a small needle into the breast and remove cells from the area of concern.

What to Expect During Your MRI-guided Biopsy at UPMC Magee-Womens Imaging

During the test, a board-certified radiologist will:

  • Place an IV with contrast dye in your arm.
  • Use MRI imaging to guide the needle and take samples of your breast tissue or cells.
  • Send the samples to the lab to see if cancer is present and you need further treatment.

While most MRI-guided breast biopsies turn out to be benign, we know waiting for your test results can be stressful.

If the biopsy does detect cancer, we'll refer you to the Magee-Womens Breast Care Program. Our world-class breast cancer doctors will work with you to decide the next step of treatment.
