Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Bringing a new life into the world is a miraculous journey. However, more than 1,800 babies every year need a little more medical attention after birth and are admitted to the Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The NICU at Magee is equipped with a total of 77 beds, consisting of 48 private bays, three open-bed pods, and one eight-bed Level III nursery on the 2700 unit.

This makes it the largest NICU in the country with private bays that utilize solid walls instead of glass or curtains. The privacy of these walls enhances Magee’s family centered care philosophy and allows for increased family interaction with baby, nurses and support staff.

About the NICU

Magee’s NICU is the largest in Pennsylvania and is a Level III unit staffed by highly trained neonatal specialists.

As a regional referral center for high-risk maternal and fetal care, Magee provides physicians and hospitals across the tri-state area with access to the highest level of resources, resulting in the best combination of care possible for patients.

Multidisciplinary teams consisting of specialists in neonatology, genetics, ultrasound, and maternal-fetal medicine help women achieve successful pregnancies.

Specialized programs in preconception genetic counseling, diabetes, prematurity, and fetal diagnosis and treatment ensure the best possible outcome for mother and baby.
