Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clerkship at UPMC Mercy

The four-week elective in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will provide the medical student with experience in evaluation and management of patients with disabilities.

The student will gain valuable exposure to trauma rehabilitation in the areas of:

  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Multiple orthopaedic trauma

In addition, rehabilitation of common problems such as:

  • Hemiplegia following stroke
  • Back pain
  • Cervical and lumbar spondylosis
  • Spasticity
  • Arthritis
  • Amputation

The student will learn physical diagnostic techniques applicable to the disorders of the musculoskeletal and neurological systems. Electrodiagnostic studies will also be demonstrated. Students in this course are expected to evaluate patients and develop treatment plans under the supervision of the department attendings and residents. Students will receive evaluations by attendings based on their clinical performance.

The PM&R Rotation is designed to give the student exposure to both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Special interests and requests can be accommodated with prior notification of the Course Coordinator.

No beeper call is required on this elective. The student will receive a schedule and contact information for preceptors on the first day of the elective.
