  • Education
  • Training

Considered one of the nation’s foremost academic-based psychiatric care facilities, Western Psychiatric houses the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

To expand its mission, UPMC developed the UPMC Behavioral Health service line, which includes the inpatient and ambulatory behavioral health services of:

  • Western Psychiatric
  • UPMC McKeesport
  • UPMC Mercy
  • UPMC Northwest

The behavioral health Consultation and Liaison Service serves many other UPMC hospitals. In addition, Western Psychiatric oversees behavioral health services at Beaver Medical Center and collaborates with many providers, schools, and nursing homes.

Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Recognized for Inclusion and Equality Programs

The foundation’s key equality metrics included patient and employee non-discrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for employees.

Western Psychiatric particularly was recognized for its specialized awareness and competency training related to inclusive care for LGBT individuals, their families, and their visitors. In developing these programs through collaboration with Human Resources and the Center for Engagement and Inclusion, Western Psychiatric established a workgroup and identified champions to consult with a variety of professionals and experts to ensure that information and training available provided the best and most up-to-date information to meet the needs of all employees.
