UPMC Shadyside Named One of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the Nation

PITTSBURGH, June 6, 2000 — A hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, UPMC Shadyside, has been named among the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country, according to a study by HCIA-Sachs Institute Inc. The hospital is the only one in the state to be named among the top 100 in the category, "Teaching Hospital with a Cardiovascular Residency Program." The award winners are announced in the current edition of the trade publication Modern Healthcare Magazine.

The study, "100 Top Hospitals ™: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success," names the best-performing hospitals for cardiovascular services. The study focused on services in the areas of acute myocardial infarction, angioplasty and coronary artery bypass procedures.

It found significant differences in performance between the top hospitals and their peers with variations of as much as 11 to 22 percent in clinical outcomes for services in the areas of heart attack, angioplasty and artery-related treatments and procedures. The study also found that patients receiving stents during angioplasty procedures were less likely to undergo a second angioplasty procedure during the study period.

The methodology used in calculating the performance measures for the study is based on computerized review and analysis of 887,172 Medicare cardiovascular cases.
