University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center Ranked By Fortune Magazine As Third-Best U.S. Company For Asian Employees
PITTSBURGH, July 9, 2001 — University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has been ranked by FORTUNE magazine as the third best company in the United States for Asian employees. The ranking is published in the July 9 issue of FORTUNE and is the result of a national survey, “America’s Best Companies for Minorities,” conducted by FORTUNE in conjunction with the non-profit Center for Responsibility in Business.
With its third-place rating, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is the only company outside of California listed in the top five best companies for Asian workers. Of the 3,890 officials and managers at the health system, 263 are Asian.

Freddie H. Fu, M.D., professor and chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is a native of Hong Kong. “It didn’t take long for my wife and me to fall in love with Pittsburgh when we arrived more than 25 years ago. We were welcomed and made to feel a part of the university medical center and the community,” said Dr. Fu.

FORTUNE surveyed all of the “FORTUNE 1,000” companies plus the 200 largest privately held firms in the country. One hundred, thirty-six organizations responded to the questionnaire. The surveyors analyzed how the companies compare based on 15 different quantitative and qualitative measures – from how well minorities are paid to how many are in management positions. The ranking criteria considered representation of race, ethnicity and gender, particularly at high levels in the organization, as well as the strength of programming to increase diversity at management levels and above.
