Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Raises Money for UPCI Research
WHAT: Check presentation for $18,000
WHY: Mars Planets and Westmont Hilltop Hilltoppers hockey teams, grades 9 to 12, chose the brain cancer program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute as the beneficiary of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League Outdoor Charity Series. They are making the donation in memory of Dave “Ziggy” Zeigler, a former employee of the Pittsburgh Penguins and popular member of the Johnstown hockey community who lost his battle with brain cancer in August 2010.
Each team completed different fundraisers, such as selling t-shirts and a skate-a-thon, to combine with proceeds from ticket sales to their games to make up their donation.
WHO: Hideho Okada, M.D., and Frank Lieberman, M.D., brain cancer researchers at UPCI; Ed Sam, commissioner, Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League; Westmont Hilltop members Andy Herbert and Madelyn Lenzie; president of the Mars Hockey Board of Directors, Maria Makozy; Donna Zeigler and daughters Kayla Zeigler and Kristen Blanding.
WHEN: 10:30a.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011
