UPMC Flag Raising Celebrating Organ Donation Kicks Off Donate Life Month

WHAT: UPMC will join the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) and Donate Life America to participate in the Flags Across America initiative. During this celebration, the Donate Life flag will be raised to honor the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been touched by organ donation.

WHO: Speakers will include John Innocenti, president, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside; Roberto Carlos Lopez-Solis, M.D., director of donor services, UPMC Division of Transplantation; Susan Stuart, president and CEO, CORE; Joseph Darby, M.D., medical director, Critical Care Outreach and UPMC Organ Donor Support Team; Gabe Kissell, donor family representative; and Mary Alice King, liver transplant recipient and president of TRIO–Pittsburgh (Transplant Recipients International Organization).

A proclamation from County Executive Dan Onorato will be presented. Cadets from the Air Force ROTC Detachment 730 will raise the flag.

WHEN: 10 a.m., Monday, April 4

WHERE: UPMC Montefiore, seventh floor, main entrance. A reception will follow at the B. Blair Crawford Garden Courtyard on the seventh floor.

WHY: As part of the Flags Across America initiative, UPMC hospitals, as well as transplant centers and recovery agencies across the United States, will fly the Donate Life flag during National Donate Life Month in April. The initiative is a visual reminder about the importance of organ donation and calls attention to the need for more organ donors.

Other events planned at UPMC in April include:

  • April 2 – Living Donor Celebration
  • Week of April 4 - Organ donor awareness drives at various locations at UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore
  • April 13 - Celebration of Life, the annual fundraiser for the transplant group TRIO-Pittsburgh
  • April 29 – UPMC Celebration of Life Program
