UPMC Hospitals Earn Top Quality Recognition from The Joint Commission

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14, 2011 – Four UPMC hospitals—UPMC Bedford Memorial, UPMC Horizon, UPMC St. Margaret and UPMC McKeesport—have been named among the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.

UPMC’s hospitals were among 405 in the country that earned this new distinction, based on 2010 data reported on evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. These top performers represent 14 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals (of those that report core measure performance data).

To be recognized as a top performer, an organization had to meet two performance thresholds:  a combined performance of 95 percent or above after the results of all the accountability measures are factored into a single score, including measures with less than 30 percent eligible cases or patients; and a 95 percent performance target for every accountability measure for which the hospital reported data, excluding any measures with less than 30 eligible cases or patients.

“Today the public expects transparency in the reporting of performance at the hospitals where they receive care, and The Joint Commission is shining a light on the top-performing hospitals that have achieved excellence on a number of vital measures of quality care,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., F.A.C.P., M.P.P., M.P.H., president of The Joint Commission.

In addition to being included in the release of The Joint Commission’s Improving America’s Hospitals annual report, the top hospitals will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check web site: www.qualitycheck.org.
