High-School Students Invited to Study Athletic Training at July Workshop
PITTSBURGH, June 18, 2012 – High-school students who are interested in exploring a sports-medicine career, or who would like to enhance their athletic training-room skills, are invited to attend the 15th annual Student Athletic Training Aide Workshop. Hosted by
UPMC Sports Medicine, the workshop will take place July 31-Aug. 2 at The Ellis School, 6425 Fifth Ave., Shadyside.
This three-day workshop is designed for high-school students to learn about the basic skills and knowledge necessary for careers in sports medicine. The workshop will expose students to key areas of sports medicine through lectures and practice with athletic training techniques and procedures.
An extensive amount of lab time will focus on skills that students can use in their scholastic athletic-training environments. Students will learn how to prepare for an athletic training program in college. The workshop will include information and training on concussions in sports. They also will have the option to receive instruction in American Heart Association adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
“This is a great outlet for any high-school student to grab hands-on experience and get to know the athletic-training profession. The Student Athletic Training Aide workshop over the years has proven to be a valuable learning process for high-school students interested in sports medicine,” said coordinator Rob McCabe, A.T.C., a certified athletic trainer at the UPMC Center for Sport Medicine.
The fee for the program is $55 if paid by July 13, 2012, $65 after that date. The cost includes course and lab materials, daily breakfast and lunch, plus a T-shirt. The optional CPR and AED certifications cost an additional $10 total. Supervising certified athletic trainers are welcome to accompany the high school students at no charge. Free parking will be provided by The Ellis School. Space is limited. For questions or to register, please call the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine at (412) 432-3770.
