Pulmonary Hypertension Patients Locally and Across the U.S. Get Active this Weekend for Team PH Hope

WHAT: Two weekend events are geared to raise awareness and donations for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) disease and for the four women cyclists preparing to bike for PH in June’s 3,000-mile Race Across America.
  • Some 77 groups in 30 states and Puerto Rico are registered to walk a mile or undertake another form of physical activity Saturday in what is being billed as the national PHenomenal Mile.
  • Locally, runners and patients will gather on Pittsburgh’s North Shore on Sunday for the PHenomenal Hope 5K Run/Walk, combining the area’s PHenomenal Mile event with a race along the Allegheny River.
WHY: PH is high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs and can lead to heart failure. It is often misdiagnosed as asthma or unrecognized for years, making it difficult to reach an accurate count of the tens of thousands afflicted. Many PH patients have shortness of breath, light-heatedness and fatigue, and receive treatments that include medications, oxygen and lung transplants, but there is no cure.
WHO:
WHEN and WHERE: Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13
  • Saturday: PHenomenal Mile (by state and number of cities) --  Alabama (2), Arizona (2), Arkansas (1), California (9), Colorado (3), Florida (3), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Illinois (2), Indiana (2), Iowa (2), Kansas (3), Kentucky (1), Maryland (1), Minnesota (4), Mississippi (1), Missouri (1), Nebraska (2), New Jersey (1), New York (1), North Carolina (3), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (1)*, Puerto Rico (2), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (2), Texas (2), Virginia (1) and Washington (1). (* only Philadelphia registered for Saturday.)
  • Sunday: PHenomenal Hope 5K Run/Walk and Mile Event in Pittsburgh — 10 a.m. race start at Heinz Field boat launch, Riverfront Park, North Shore
Note to Media: For PHenomenal Mile coverage in your local area, please consult contact information found in PHA website list of participating cities. For Pittsburgh coverage, contact Chuck Finder at 412-996-5852 or FinderCE@upmc.edu.
