UPMC St. Margaret Receives Highest Nursing Credential with Prestigious Magnet® Recognition…Again

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10, 2014UPMC St. Margaret has been notified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that it once again has achieved Magnet® recognition as part of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®. This voluntary credentialing program for hospitals, now the gold standard for nursing excellence, recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care and innovations in professional nursing practice.
Other UPMC hospitals to earn prestigious Magnet recognition include UPMC Shadyside and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
“Achieving Magnet recognition is a source of pride for UPMC St. Margaret and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest quality care to the community,” said David Patton, president, UPMC St. Margaret. “We are truly honored to be recognized again as a Magnet hospital, joining a very exclusive group of truly outstanding health care organizations.”
UPMC St. Margaret began its Journey to Magnet Excellence® more than nine years ago and was granted Magnet recognition in 2009, following a rigorous and lengthy process.
For the past four years, under the leadership of Chief Nursing Officer Mary Barkhymer, M.S.N., R.N., UPMC St. Margaret has participated in the ANCC’s even-more stringent Magnet re-designation process. To earn re-designation, UPMC St. Margaret compiled an expansive body of evidence demonstrating that the Magnet concepts of nursing practice, research and measurement of outcomes were sustained and improved since the hospital received its initial recognition and that the hospital’s culture supported high levels of quality patient care, patient satisfaction and employee engagement.
“Magnet recognition is the highest honor we can achieve for nursing excellence, and it really speaks to the highly professional and patient-centered culture that we strive for at UPMC St. Margaret,” Barkhymer said. “What UPMC St. Margaret has achieved is an extraordinary team effort, and it is something we will continue to build on in order to provide patients with superior quality and innovative care.”
