Paul  E. Phrampus, MD

​Dr. Phrampus has been instrumental in expanding the reach of WISER throughout the UPMC system and has overseen the development of four UPMC WISER satellite campuses. WISER is the pre-eminent hospital-based human simulation center in the nation, with a mission to conduct simulation-based training and research to provide a safer environment for patients at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and its affiliates. WISER conducts more than 11,000 training sessions annually with over 3,500 physicians, nurses, medical and nursing students, emergency medical personnel and many other health care professionals.

An internationally recognized expert in the field of simulation in health care, Dr. Phrampus has provided expertise and conducted workshops and seminars worldwide. With a focus on ensuring the quality and safe delivery of health care, Dr. Phrampus led a team that created a simulation-based Difficult Airway Management Program, required for over 170 emergency physicians who practice at UPMC. He has also deployed simulation technology for both testing and competency assessment measures in emergency medical services in southwestern Pennsylvania and co-authored a simulation course for flight crew training for air ambulance services.

Dr. Phrampus received his undergraduate degree in biology from Old Dominion University and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. He completed his residency training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
