Dr. Medsger’s primary clinical and investigative interest is the connective tissue diseases, particularly systemic sclerosis, or scleroderma. He has made significant contributions to understanding the epidemiology, clinical and laboratory features and natural history of scleroderma.
Dr. Medsger has also published on adult-onset Still's disease, polymyositis-dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Raynaud's disease and Sjogren's disease.
In June, 2005, Dr. Medsger received the “Doctor of the Year” Award from the Scleroderma Foundation in recognition of his career-long work in clinical research and treatment of scleroderma.
He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, after which he did his internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., a post-docoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh and his residency in internal medicine at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
