Six UPMC Specialties Ranked as "Best" by U.S. News and World Report

PITTSBURGH, July 18, 1997 — Once again, U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" edition includes several University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) specialty areas. The rankings will appear in the July 28 issue of the magazine, on newsstands Monday, July 21.

UPMC ranks fifth in otolaryngology, 14th in gastroenterology, 14th in rheumatology, 22nd in orthopedics, 23rd in pulmonary disease and 34th in neurology. Forty-two of the nation's leading hospitals in each specialty area are included in these lists.

This year, U.S. News and World Report ranked hospitals using three parameters: reputation with board-certified specialists (a survey of 150 in each specialty area); predicted mortality rates; various medical information (e.g. nurse/bed ratio, technology index, discharges) based on 1994 data submitted to the American Hospital Association.
