University of Pittsburgh Researcher Named Director of Regional HIV/AIDS Education Center

PITTSBURGH, February 21, 2000 — Linda Frank, Ph.D., M.S.N., assistant professor of infectious disease and microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, has been appointed director of the Pennsylvania/Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), and has received a federal grant of $6 million to fund the center over the next three years. The appointment was made by the HIV/AIDS Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which funds the national AETC program under the Ryan White CARE Act.

The Pennsylvania/Mid-Atlantic AETC, like the other 14 AETCs nationwide, provides education and training on HIV infection and AIDS to health care professionals. Since 1988, Dr. Frank has been director of the Pennsylvania AETC, which now is expanded to include the mid-Atlantic region -- West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and the District of Columbia. AETCs target Ryan White-funded providers including community and migrant health centers, jails, prisons, juvenile detention centers, managed care organizations, state agencies and other programs that serve poor and medically underserved individuals in both urban and rural areas. Training of minorities and those who serve minorities is emphasized.

"I welcome the opportunity to widen the scope of the Pennsylvania AETC to include the District of Columbia and the four additional states of the Mid-Atlantic region," said Dr. Frank. "The importance of health care professionals receiving information on the latest in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment on an ongoing basis cannot be overemphasized, and I look forward to helping ensure that this information gets out to educators throughout the region."

"Dr. Frank has done an outstanding job as director of the Pennsylvania AETC for eleven years," said Laura W. Cheever, M.D., chief, HIV Education Branch, HIV/AIDS Bureau, HRSA. "We are confident that under her leadership, the Pennsylvania/Mid-Atlantic AETC will be equally successful in bringing much-needed HIV/AIDS instruction to educators in the larger region."
