UPMC Homecare Acquires St. Francis Home Health Services

PITTSBURGH, April 24, 2001 — UPMC HomeCare has announced the acquisition of St. Francis Health System's Home Health Services.

St. Francis Health System's Home Health Services has joined UPMC/South Hills Health System Home Health, L.P.

Chartwell of Pennsylvania, a subsidiary of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has acquired the home infusion portion of St. Francis Home Health.

“Through this acquisition, UPMC is better positioned to provide a seamless network of home care to a larger number of patients, especially the elderly, who are the fastest growing population in our region,” said Kathleen Patrick, senior vice president of in-home services at UPMC. "Through our extensive line of home care services and products, our HomeCare professionals visit and care for thousands of patients everyday to help them in their transition from the hospital to home.”

St. Francis Health System implemented a Management Action Plan last November that called for the divestiture of home health and home infusion services. The plan was designed to improve the financial performance of the system and concentrate on and strengthen St. Francis core service competencies. Sister Florence Brandt, president and chief executive officer of St. Francis Health System, emphasized that “Our system continues to be deeply committed to maintaining our long-standing mission to ensure the high quality of patient care synonymous with St. Francis. This transition is another initiative of the collaboration among health care organizations in western Pennsylvania that is called for in this economic environment."

"The cooperative nature of this acquisition reinforces the importance of focusing on patient needs," said Penny Milanovich, executive director of UPMC/South Hills Health System Home Health, L.P. "It will permit us to expand services and clinical expertise to home care patients throughout the region."

UPMC/South Hills Health System Home Health serves more than 32,000 patients in 15 counties in Pennsylvania and Ohio and accounts for more than 430,000 home health visits each year. It employs approximately 500 nurses, therapists and support staff.

UPMC/South Hills Health System Home Health provides services in mental health, orthopaedic/neurologic rehabilitation, home infusion/oncology, maternal-child, pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, wound care, hospice and palliative care. In addition, it provides specialized care in skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, home health aid and nutrition.
