UPMC is Honored as One of the Country's Most Innovative Users of Information Technology and is Ranked Fifth Among All U.S. Companies

PITTSBURGH, September 20, 2004 The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has been ranked No. 1 in health care in the InformationWeek 500, a prestigious annual listing of the most innovative users of information technology (IT) in the United States. UPMC led all other health systems and has been ranked 5th among all U.S. companies.

Spanning 21 industries and major U.S. companies, the InformationWeek 500 provides unrivaled insight into the business-technology practices of the nation's most innovative IT users. To qualify for the study, a company completed a comprehensive qualifying application that detailed management priorities, technology strategies, staffing initiatives and budget plans.

In receiving this honor, UPMC has been recognized above such nationally well-known companies as Hewlett-Packard Co., General Motors Corp., Capital One Financial Corp., Xerox, AT&T, Texas Instruments Inc., Verizon Communications, and other prestigious corporations and health systems. Regionally, UPMC placed above Mellon Financial Corp., Highmark Inc., and PNC Financial Services Group.

This significant recognition reflects UPMC's strong commitment to using state-of-the-art technologies to continually improve clinical outcomes and enhance the way we deliver health care to our consumers and physicians.

In conjunction with the 500 ranking announcement, InformationWeek is holding its annual fall conference this week, in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in which industry leaders from some of the world's most influential companies will discuss the inescapable link between IT and business processes.

UPMC has committed $500 million to IT initiatives believing that advanced communication capability is the very lifeblood of any modern health care organization.

The centerpiece of the UPMCs information technology efforts is the eRecord, (electronic health record). The foundation of the eRecord has been implemented across many UPMC hospitals and physician practices.

Key features of the initiative involve the development and system-wide deployment of technologies that impact access to care, such as online scheduling of appointments, patient access to their UPMC medical records, including lab results, medications, immunizations and current health problems and registration for various clinical services.

Through the initiative, patients also are able to have their prescription refills ordered online and have more direct and ongoing communication with their physicians and other caregivers.

In addition, UPMC pharmacists and nurses on some patient units have begun implementing positive patient identification (PPID) using bar code technology at the point of medication administration in an effort to further reduce medication errors.

Applying eRecord technology solutions has decreased pharmacy costs at UPMCs largest hospital by $1.5 million this year while increasing the number of patients and in the face of a 12 percent increase in pharmaceutical pricing.

IT initiatives also have decreased need to repeat laboratory, radiology or other invasive and expensive tests because the data and x-rays are shared.

UPMCs investment of $500 million in IT initiatives has produced an average of 10 percent return per year for the first five years. This 10 percent is roughly valued at $50 million per year.

UPMC, with 39,000 employees is the largest integrated health care delivery system in Pennsylvania and one of the leading nonprofit medical centers in the country. The University of Pittsburgh and affiliated programs attract more than $375 million annually in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, ranking the academic medical center 7th in the nation in 2003.

UPMC is the largest employer in western Pennsylvania. More than 4,000 physicians have privileges at UPMC hospitals including about 1,950 employed physicians. UPMC spans the full spectrum of health care delivery with its network of 20 tertiary, specialty and community hospitals and 400 outpatient sites and doctors offices. UPMC also operates the largest trauma center in Pennsylvania.

With more than 4,000 licensed beds, UPMC has 174,000 admissions per year and 3 million outpatients visits. It is the largest provider of independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing options in the region with 14 freestanding retirement and long-term care facilities.

For 15 years, the InformationWeek 500 has tracked organizations' IT agendas, providing a unique opportunity to understand and examine their business practices across core areas of operations. According to InformationWeek, to make the list, a company must demonstrate a pattern of technological, procedural and organizational innovation. Companies were examined on various areas of operations, including technology development, information technology budget, technology strategies, E-business, customer knowledge initiatives and staff management.
