UPMC Health Plan Rated One of Top 5 Plans in Region by NCQA

PITTSBURGH (September 27, 2004) UPMC Health Plan has been named a top-five plan in the Middle Atlantic region by the National Committee for Quality Assurance(NCQA) in its report titled "The State of Health Care Quality: 2004."

UPMC Health Plan is the only commercial health plan in western Pennsylvania to earn this distinction. Only health plans that have an "excellent" accreditation rating from NCQA are eligible to be rated. UPMC Health Plan earned an "excellent" accreditation rating in 2003, after its first full review.

"This kind of recognition is especially gratifying because it reflects the dedication and hard work done by everyone in our network doctors, nurses, hospitals, case management workers, and all other health care providers. This honor shows our overall commitment to quality," said Diane P. Holder, president of UPMC Health Plan. "This also demonstrates that being the primary portal to the premier services and facilities of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center continues to help us improve the health of our members and our community."

The top five plans in each of nine different regions were determined by Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) Effectiveness of Care measures. HEDIS is a set of standardized performance measures designed to ensure that purchasers and consumers have the information they need to reliably compare the performance of managed health care plans.

HEDIS measures quality indicators such as: childhood immunization, breast cancer screening and diabetes management.

UPMC Health Plan reviewers are examining the 2004 report. UPMC Health Plan-specific results will be announced following this review.

NCQA is an independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates managed care organizations. NCQA analyzes HEDIS data from 262 commercial health plans covering more than 69 million Americans. The data reported in "The State of Health Care Quality" are drawn from NCQA's Quality Compass report.

HEDIS is a registered trademark of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

The Middle Atlantic region comprises Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

(Editor's note: NCQA makes plan-specific Quality Compass data available to the media at no charge. Reporters interested in producing local health care "report cards" should contact the NCQA Communications Department at 1-202-955-3518 to discuss data needs.)
